I have to admit that when Shane from Hacksaw called me up and told me they were starting a Disco vs Dubstep night at Poleng Lounge, I was a little dubious. While I suppose I’ve always respected disco and things that sprung from it as being one of the prototypes of the music that turned into the stuff I love, I just never had much love for a straight beat, and as I get older I only get more set in my ways (as evidenced by my complete lack of enthusiasm for the Wolf and Lamb show that everyone seems to be freaking out about this weekend). Nevertheless, I’m game to give anything a shot, and Hacksaw are good folks, and, well, they basically are letting me pick the dubstep lineup for at least a little while. So I can’t argue with that, because there are some damn good (and adventurous) folks here in SF to showcase, and at the end of the day after 12 years of doing this, it’s nice to have a weekly soapbox on which to perch … all the more sweet for not having sought it out! So come check it out!

They even made a fun video for it!
On a final, sadder note, a friendĀ of mine and fellow DJ who was closely connected to my crew from back in New York was hit by a car on his Vespa on Sunday and was killed instantly. Josh Link was a wonderful guy and we used to trade endless knowledge about jungle/dnb back in the day, and then head off to late night dinners in Chinatown. I haven’t seen him in years, but he will definitely be missed. I have a couple great photos of him somewhere in storage, I’ll grab one and scan it and throw it here next time I have a chance.
